MARINA HOERMANSEDER

The final of this season’s Berlin Fashion Week was the show by Marina Hoermanseder. The meanwhile internationally renowned designer always manages to arrange for a special setting for her show and to have a high density of German celebrities in the front row.

This time the show was almost hidden in Berlin’s largest kart venue. Once we found the place we were expected by a place that – typically for the Austrian born designer – was set up as real venue with drinks, popcorn and many meets & greets even before the show.

Placed within a sitcom setting that refers to “Married with children” the new Autumn / Winter 19 collection is clearly stating “Hello 90’s!” A mix of bright and shouting colours, leopard prints, miniskirts and flared pants is made for high spirits. Western elements interestingly break with this mix of colours and add an interesting touch to the designs.

As various as the colour range is Hoermanseder’s mix of fabrics and materials. Voluminous and fluffy teddy like furs meet leather corsets, leather strap skirts, relaxed sweaters and shiny stirrup pants. Again, Marina Hoermanseder has created a collection that is worth discovering and that is fun and wearable at the same time. It’s playful, exaggerated and elegant. In addition, the designer manages to further strengthen her unique design language by incorporating her signature orthopaedic like elements and strap pieces into the collection with natural ease. Well done and we look forward to seeing the collection on the street.

REFINERY COFFEE

Refinery Coffee

There are countless cafés in Berlin, but some stick out. One of these is Refinery – High End Coffee, where you can enjoy both, one of the city’s best cheesecakes and simply good coffee. Brewing coffee is some sort of magical science and the tough, tattooed, bearded baristas behind the counter command it to perfection. This rough crew spirit combined with a beautiful Scandinavian interior and the smell of fresh coffee lure coffee lovers to Albrechtstraße, where Refinery just opened its doors again after some construction works. And maybe you will be amongst them after reading this passionate interview with Refinery co-founders Bora and Tansel.

Before we come to Refinery, please tell us a bit about yourselves.

We, Bora and Tansel, have been brainstorming about our own business, which would release our ideas and dreams, for a while. Honestly, it took some time until we made a decision to dive into coffee industry. When we think about it now, it should have been obvious since we start our mornings with high quality espresso and that’s how the best ideas come across. For us, coffee is not a drink. It is a culture, ritual, exploration and discovery.

Photo @ Refinery

What is the story behind Refinery and how did it come to life?

The vision was to establish a place which connects an industrial, raw and a little rough spirit and Scandinavian design perception in the heart of Berlin city. There are lots of places to drink a coffee, but the dream was to create a community, bring together the people who have a passion for coffee culture and have interest in creative industries. Refinery, since the very first beginning, was meant to be a very multicultural, multilingual, extremely vivid and sophisticated spot with the urban look and genuine atmosphere.

You are working with very special equipment. Would you tell us a bit more about that?

Water supply and power are the core. However, for our espressi we are using the “Spirit”, that is tailor made in Amsterdam. This machine allows us to perfectly extract espresso shots by offering accurate temperature control and pressure profiling per group head. Our grinders are by Mahlkönig (EK43) and Mazzer (Robur). Don’t forget that all our coffees are made from double shots of espresso of course!

Photo @ Refinery

Refinery only uses coffee from local roasters like The Barnand Bonanza. What are the characteristics of your coffee?

Refinery is eager to support local roasters and create special atmosphere with an emphasis on high quality and service. As a result, our baristas have worked together with a local roaster to create the best blend. All these key features come together for the special moments and memories. Refinery should be perceived as an artisan process to extract the best of the coffee’s flavour from farmer to roaster to barista to customer serving coffee specialities to perfection connecting nature and handcraft with soul. The place can be directly related with genuine latte and brew art.

Every month you have a different roast specialty for coffee lovers. What are the standards they have to meet?

Refinery’s Coffee goal is to surprise and make the coffee lovers even more in love with coffee. The idea to have a monthly special is tightly connected with keeping the diversity and exploration spirit. It is usually an amazing single origin coffee from Africa or South America. The coffee connoisseur will love these special coffees for their perfect shot of espresso!

Besides the machine and the coffee – What is the secret of your art of making good coffee?

Passion, knowledge, practice, willingness to develop and discover, exploration. It is a never ending process and combination of professional and personal characteristics. Starting off with the coffee beans of course, but equally important are the baristas. The Refinery Coffee team has a very high competence, seeks for achievements and believes in coffee magic. There is no secret, rather in opposite: we are open-minded, charismatic and very into coffee. Simple truth.

From the interior to your baristas – Refinery has a very unique and rough style. How does that come?

To me the most important thing is to provide a cosy place for my customers, where they can relax and enjoy their time. The secret weapon is to have dedicated baristas, who are passionate about what they do and we are very lucky to have found them!

What else is there to get at Refinery?

Refinery offers a wonderful, varied mix of fresh and homemade food, ranging from sandwiches to great pies and cookies. Everything is entirely fresh and home-cooked. We use seasonal and locally produced ingredients. We also offer a broad range of juices, smoothies, frappés and iced coffees. And not to forget about our cheesecake, which is unmatched.

How do you personally drink your coffee?

Simple and effective, an espresso shot is the best way to taste a good coffee.

Thank you for the interview!

MAISONNOÉE

Moments de la vie

The Maisonnoée show is always good for a surprise and this time was no exception. The first appearance on the runway at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Berlin were two kids who rocked the house instead of walking in a way that left the audience jubilate. The following show was in no way inferior.

Both kids and women collection were inspired by the uniqueness and beauty of the moments we experience in our lives. Suitably the fabrics range from heavier quality like leather and cashmere to light and floating material as silk and lace with connotation to the fleetingness of seconds. This adds up to a collection that is defined by its variety and overall elegance contrasted by sporty and military elements like hoodies and camouflage prints referring to values like freedom, authenticity and conscious behaviour.

In terms of colour the collection is dominated by darker tones like black, grey, dark blue and green and completed by spots of colour like red, bright yellow and white – again reflecting highlights that brighten up our days. As typically for designer Sophie Oemus the Fall/Winter 2019 collection persuades by it’s clear cuts, feminine appearance and unagitated elegance that makes the designs special but at the same time very wearable for the sophisticated woman.

A collection to brighten even the darkest of winter days

The first show to take place at E-Werk, the Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Berlin’s venue was the debut of Amesh Wijesekera that can be titled by almost one word: colour! The London born Sri Lankan designer who grew up in Colombo, Sri Lankas capital, now lives between the two cities which obviously strongly influences his designs.

His Autumn/Winter 2019 collection is made to brighten every day. It is dominated by vibrant and bold colours like red, magenta, orange, yellow, green, and blue completed with pale gold and brushed copper that make you intuitively think of Indian spice markets or sunsets in the Indian Ocean. As various as his selection of colours are the fabrics the designer uses. Bold patterned tech fabrics are combined with fine silks, skilful stitching and rough knitwear to form voluminous and expressive, mostly genderless silhouettes. We see a variance in designs from relaxed T-Shirts with patches made of colourful sunset like fabrics and coloured fringes, cool shorts and wide pants, more formal shirts – loosened up by colourful patches, elegant blazers and coats to sexy tops. No matter how different each design is as such the combination of all is still harmonious and pleasing for the eye.

Overall Amesh Wijesekera made an impressive debut with his first major collection that was far from mainstream and we are excited to see more in the coming seasons.

#FASHIONTECH BERLIN

We all recognize that digitalization and the fast technological development has an impact on all of us. Therefore, it’s no wonder that this also affects the fashion industry. Visitors to Berlin Fashion Week will find the answers at the #FASHIONTECH BERLIN conference, taking place at KRAFTWERK, Köpenicker Straße 70, 10179 Berlin, which brings together fashion companies, the tech industry and the start-up community, with the aim of discussing topics surrounding the digital transformation, change management, innovation and disruptive technologies.

Michael, what is #FASHIONTECH BERLIN?

The #FASHIONTECH BERLIN conference, which was founded in January 2015 by the PREMIUM GROUP, is the leading C-level tech conference for the fashion industry in respect to digitalisation. We will talk about topics like ‘How to transform the organisation’, which we will be breaking down into the aspects of companies’ culture, leadership and the whole future of work, technical innovation and of course the customers’ journey.

Who are the addressees of #FASHIONTECH BERLIN?

Our visitors are C-level executives from fashion, retail, tech, politics, the economy and the media. In July representatives from 38 countries attended, including the USA, Germany, Italy, France, the UK, Austria, Switzerland, Canada, India, China, Thailand and Vietnam, not forgetting Russia and Israel too. We are also particularly appealing to start-ups though — which is very important in view of an interdisciplinary dialogue on the subject of innovation and corporate culture. As one of the events organised by the PREMIUM GROUP and part of Berlin Fashion Week we connect the players in the fashion industry with other relevant industries. We create a mix of different ecosystems with the aim of attracting a broad and varied composition of visitors.

#FASHIONTECH BERLIN is part of Berlin Fashion Week. How is it integrated into the fashion week program?

Through the collaboration between the PREMIUM GROUP, which hosts #FASHIONTECH BERLIN on 15 January 2019, and Messe Frankfurt, which hosts FASHIONSUSTAIN on 16 January 2019, visitors can access a wide-ranging program of content relevant to the industry.

Does #FASHIONTECH BERLIN only cover fashion topics?

Twice a year, during Berlin Fashion Week, #FASHIONTECH BERLIN connects fashion with the tech industry and the start-up community, with the aim of discussing topicssurrounding the digital transformation, innovations, change management and disruptive technologies. The conference creates the stage for interdisciplinary exchange between the different industries. The networking areas give visitors the opportunity to network with the speakers, industry insiders and entrepreneurs, as well as to seek out new business partners and generate business leads. #FASHIONTECH BERLIN has evolved to become a leading European content hub for technology, digitalisation, sustainability and innovation.

Beside the business element the #FASHIONTECH BERLIN program contains the sections Listen, Learn and Experience. What does that mean?

The #FASHIONTECH BERLIN conference is set up to the needs of the fashion industry. To achieve this, the conference is structured in three core areas: #LISTEN! featuring keynote presentations from leading international experts on the stage; #LEARN! with its interactive masterclasses for passing on detailed specialist knowledge; and #EXPERIENCE! in the Exhibition Area, which is where the latest developments, products and innovations in the market are introduced.

Is there a focus of #FASHIONTECH BERLIN?

There are a lot of important questions around digitalization to answer. The ‘Future of Work’ is one of them. It will play a major role as a new central theme, focussing on the following questions: what do the working models of the future look like? What job profile will companies and employees need in the future?

Artificial intelligence is another important topic – not just in connection with CRM programs, but also when it comes to further developing the processes along the supply chain. Analysing huge quantities of data from social media, e-commerce and smartphone feeds enables preferences, interests and consumers’ buying habits to be analysed. These can then be adapted to create a buying experience tailored to that customer’s personal requirements. Exciting examples of course include those from pioneers like Zalando and Amazon, along with Hugo Boss, Uniqlo and Nordstrom.

Is there any side-program at #FASHIONTECH BERLIN?

There is no special side-program especially for #FASHIONTECH BERLIN. It is part of Berlin Fashion Week which means that there are so many things anyway going around.

Last but not least, what have people to do to visit #FASHIONTECH BERLIN?

It’s easy. You can get your ticket at https://fashiontech.premium-group.com/en/ which gives you access to Conference and Stage Programme for EUR 240.00 (+19% VAT).
The Exhibition, the Masterclasses and the Networking Area are free of charge for PREMIUM GROUP badge holders.
Media and Press can pre-register at press@fashiontech.berlin.

Thank you for the interview. See you at #FASHIONTECH BERLIN

CREATIVE APPROACH

No matter what mood or ambience there is, I’m looking for authenticity in a natural aesthetic way. Moments that feel pure and true. Surprisingly different but never forced. I want my audience to still feel free to make up their own story when looking at my work.

Love to show the moments in between.

Only a photograph can capture those moments. Here for I use dynamics of my subjects to get moments no one else can see except the camera.

I love what happens when a powerful movement transform into a poetic shot in a single frame. Also, I use colours and Lights and Shadows to sign.

SOURCE OF INSPIRATION

My Inspiration is like for everybody who creates things just everything what surrounds me. Especially in summer I see much more colours and I see interesting colour mixtures I use in my work. Also, I love visual Illusions in every kind of art like paintings, illustrations, etc.

I enjoy the lightning at afternoon to evening. The shadows look sometimes like brushes on the streets which change their directions.

ABOUT THE FASION EDITORIAL

AIRY is a project a had in mind for a quite long time. My Mother is very passionate about knitting. I asked her to do some Baclavas for this shoot. So, it was kind of a team project with my mother. I put my models up in the air or to places it seems not possible to stay. I love that confusion in pictures! I wanted to create a fresh and unusual fashion editorial outdoors with some eye-catching moments.

Many thanks to the photographers & their teams, the interview partners, the editors and everybody who worked hard for this Superior Magazine # 66 issue!

Dear Superior Magazine readers

We wish all of you a wonderful, healthy, successful and exciting year 2019 !!!

It is a Superior Magazine tradition that our January issue includes some Berlin Fashion Week content. This time our focus is on the #FASHIONTECH BERLIN conference and we present some great sustainable fashion labels you find at the NEONYT trade fair. For the fashion shows have a look at our website and social media channels.

The fashion editorials have been contributed by the photographers Arno Ende, Christina Sandrock and Patrick Schwalb, all from Germany and Vincent Binant from Paris. As cover story we have chosen THE BOYS ARE BACK IN TOWN by Arno Ende. It’s a story about boys’ friendship. Growing up together in a small neighbourhood and hanging out probably the last time at their places as they did so many times… before living the grown-up life and leaving their hood into all directions.

For the category Art + Design we interviewed the UK based artist Richard young. In Culture + Travel read about Sarah Weyers’ trip to Iceland.

Enjoy our first 2019 Superior Magazine issue …
